Excellent Day

We ended up 8th out of 9. Pretty good for our first competition. We were only 90 points (Out of 1000) behind the winner of our Class. Drum Line finished 7th and our "Color Guard" finished 5th.

I hope you all had a good time. I had a great day, and I am very pleased with our performance. Do we have room to grow, yes. However, I could not have asked for better results for a first year. It seems that a big hit on the score was the drill design. I will have to work on that for next year.

Thanks for a great time, and all your hard work.

I'll see you on the 1st. Check back early in the week for comments and video of the show today.

Busy Week Ahead

I have been sitting here today thinking about next week. We have so much to do. Please keep in mind the following:

Tuesday 6:30 am (I will be coming from Ft. Duchesne so it could be 6:33)
Wednesday After School
Thursday 6:30 am
Friday Beginning of class until we are done.

Make sure your uniform is complete before Tuesday. See Nashelle if you need help, but be nice to her. If there are no pants that fit you make sure you have solid black pants. Everyone needs black shoes.

Thursday have you uniform, shoes, and hat at the school labeled and ready to go.

Last of all get plenty of rest this week. Saturday is a big day.

All the work: Is it worth it?

As I watch drum corps, jazz ensembles, orchestras, and other bands I often think back to when I was a performer in such a group. I remember the fun times and how enjoyed the experience more than any other. I often forget the hard work and stress that was needed to accomplish the task, but it was there.

As we work this year to strive to achieve greatness we will encounter road blocks, and lots of hard work. We will challenge our friendships and dedication to the art. We will find times unpleasant and difficult. We will also find joy in a completion of something great.

Jenkins Lloyd Jones wrote the following in the Deseret News back in 1973. It is still very true today and even true in our situation.

“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed.

“[The fact is] most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. …

“Life is like an old-time rail journey—delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed."

The answer to the question posited above is, in my opinion, a resounding yes!

Thank you for the hard work so far this year, and lets step it up a notch.

We all need to get along and have fun together. Lets do it.

Homecoming

Thank you to all of you for a great Homecoming Day. I know it was not easy with me gone most of the day, but I appreciate you working so hard in my absence. The game went very well. We received many compliments and I was pleased with the result.

Next we need to fine tune the opener, and learn the closer. I would love to get a score over 80 for a first time marching competition. Thanks for the hard work, lets set to it again.

Marching Band Gigs

I think I have us registered to compete in two shows. The first will be on Oct 9 (Tue) at BYU. THe second will be Oct 20 (Sat) in American Fork. Both shows are "New Band" friendly. I should have conformation in the next few days that we are in, but all looks good. Plan now to attend. I am planning to find an evening that we can do the show in our own stadium for parents and the community as well. I really want this to be a great opportunity for all, lets pull together and make it great.

We have an official answer to the proposed Holiday Bowl trip. That answer is no. We will not be going on that trip. When I asked about an in state trip in April or May I was told to write up a proposal and we would see. If any of you have an idea of a trip you would like to take in state give me the ideas. Opening Assembly

We have been asked to play at the opening assembly. In order to pull this off we will be having a practice Tuesday @ 8:00 a.m. and then we will meet on Wednesday @ 7:00 a.m. Please plan to be there.

Lowes Gig Info

I spoke with the lady organizing the event ad here is the plan for Tuesday:

10:00 Drum Line and Tubas @ UHS to load. Others start to show up at Lowes
10:30 Be at Lowes ready to warm up
10:30 Warm up
12:20 (about) performance

From about 10 to 11:30 there will be raffle tickets and food available. I think both will cost money. At about 11:30 the ceremony begins. We should be on about 12:15 or 12:20. After we perform there will be a few more items in the event. We need to stay there for the check presentation and the photo-op. Do not plan to leave until it is over. (If you have an issue let me know and we will work these out on a 1 on 1 basis.)

I think we should be done by 1:00. (No promises.)

I really need to have a large turn out for this event. Whether you are planning to do fall band or not please come help us out with this gig. Monday @ 9 we will have a music rehearsal to finalize the program. (Practice starts at 6:30)

You will need to wear the band shirts, black pants, and black shoes. If you are not going to do fall band, did not do summer band, and will not be doing BBall pep band you may choose not to buy a shirt. In this case please where a white polo style shirt instead.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Party was Great!!!

For the ones who could not make it because of work or other obligations we are sorry you missed it. We had a great time playing games, eating, and just hanging out. My wife, Heather, says you are all welcome any time.

I was very impressed that the house was clean when you left, and that you were all gone within 10 minutes of the end. Thanks again for the great time. The only regret I have is that I forgot to take pictures.

Notification Help

SIS is in the process of being rolled over for the new school year. This means that I could not get everyone's address. With the help of the office I did get the address of the students who will be Juniors or Seniors next year. A lot of the younger students are siblings of these students and will know of the letter. However I need your help to let everyone else know about the information I need. If you know a younger student who does not have an older sibling in band please tell them about the letter and have them either call me or check out the online version here at the blog. I want to get a good idea of who to expect for the fall marching band. I can get the Aug 4 question answered by the students who show up next week for the 24th parade.

I just mailed out the letter today, so you should see it by Saturday. Thanks in advance for all the help. It is amazing how much I am still trying to learn after being here almost a year. We are doing great though thanks to all your help.

UBIC Parade?

There is a parade in Roosevelt on August 4. It is a Saturday and would start at 10:00 a.m. Are we interested in playing in Roosevelt for a parade?

July 4 Parade

The parade last week was very well done. I was very pleased with how good you looked and sounded. We received numerous compliments. Great job. I need everyone at practice this week, please plan to attend. Parade this Wednesday line-up is at 4:00 p.m.

Lowes' Ground Breaking

You all know about the Lowes that is being built on 40. You may have noticed that they broke ground for it already. What you don't know is that there will be an official ground breaking on August 14. We have been asked to play at the event and we agreed. The meeting time will be announced at a later time. Plan now to attend that day.

Summer Parade Update

It has been a while w/o a post. So here is the latest info for the summer.

Parade tomorrow line-up @ 9:00 a.m. Remember black pants and black shoes.

Rodeo parade date and time reported were in error. I made the mistake of looking at the official rodeo website (http://www.vernalrodeo.com/) and they listed the parade as on the 12th. (It turns out that the information on their web page is over a year old.)

I had some very helpful parents who heard that the parade was actually on the 11th. I did confirm this discrepancy and the parade is on the 11th. It is also earlier in the day than reported. It is at 5 not 6. Line-up will then be at 4:00 p.m. on the 11th.

The other parade in July will be on the 24th with line-up at 9:00 a.m.

A word about the slide show

Every year I have taken pictures throughout the year to remember the things we accomplished. After the second year of this I discovered the ability to make a digital collage to share with the students. From that point on I have done a slide show at the end of every year. This year I got kind of overwhelmed toward the end of the year and did not have a lot of time to accomplish this task.

I had mentioned the show many times throughout the year and did not want to disappoint the members of the band who wanted to see it. I had about 1200 pictures to sort through and I tried hard to get some of everyone. I did this in about 10 minutes. I am sure that I left some students out on accident, and I noticed that some students had several pictures in the show.

My intent of the show is not to exclude, or showcase. If you were left out of the show or felt like it was to focused on one student please forgive my speedy compilation and neglect. All of the pictures that I had to choose from will either be on line or are there now. I hope you enjoyed the show despite the fact that it was put together in a sloppy fashion. I will strive to do better for next year.

I have in the past not given out copies of the shows I have created, but I might be willing to change that policy if there is a great desire to do so.

May HS Concert is Over

Well the program went a little longer than I had hoped, but I felt that it was a success. Thank you all who attended. I will have pictures posted in the next few days, and if you are interested in a copy of the slide show I may make that available as well.

Check back in the next 2 days. I will have the new BPSA students posted and the new Junior Drum Major as well.

Hope you all enjoyed the year as much as I did, and are looking forward to summer.

The Band Parent Student Association for next year is in the process of being filled. We have been voting in class for student representatives. We would very much like to extend the association to have some parent involvement as well.

I am thinking that we would like a Parent President, Vice-President, and Secretary at least. If you are interested in filling one of these positions please let me know.

Fundraising Idea?

I received a note from a gentleman who is publishing a new book on planning for retirement. He had children in band and knows how we need $. He is offering to use his new book as a fundraising opportunity. His proposal is sell the books for $20 ($5 off the cover price) and the band gets 50%.

I am not sure that the book he is offering would be a big seller. My question for you is what do you think? Here is the document about the book he sent me.

One of my studious students found a web site that has solo and ensemble music for free. (OK not free there is a yearly membership fee.) We purchased the membership for the school. If you find a piece on the site you would like let me know and I'll get it for you.

Note: If you click on the link "Sheet Music Store" these items are not included in the yearly membership plan. You would need to pay the price listed for these pieces. To see the free stuff click on "Composer index" or "Instrument index."

Note that I had this wrong when I first posted it. The concert band concert is still on the 27th.

BYU Festival was Great!

We had the Jazz Band in Provo this weekend to participate in the BYU Cresent Jazz Festival. It was an outstanding weekend. We heard some great concerts, some some great clinics, and got to work with a good clinician as well. Our scores were not as good as we had hoped, but we learned a lot and will be better prepared for Region in three weeks. Look for pictures from the weekend to come soon.

I have just published a page with the December concert pictures on it. The link is to the right. I did not take any out. These are all the pictures taken that night on my camera. (The good, the bad, and the ugly.) Enjoy!
